About the pattern

Fáinleog is Irish for swallow. Swallows arrive in Ireland in April, having travelled thousands of miles from Africa. Every year I am impatient to see their busy silhouettes in the skies and when they suddenly appear, I know for sure – summer is almost here.

Size

Finished measurements after blocking are approximately 113 cm / 44.5 in circumference and 14 cm / 5.50 in width.

Yarn

Whin pattern is suitable for Sport weight yarn, only small amounts are used for each colour, so this project is perfect for destashing.

The sample is knitted in Apple Oak Fibre Works Softwool (Sport weight, 100% wool, 300 m / 328 yds per 100g skein). The following shades were used: Nightingale (light blue); Where Sky Meets Sea (dark blue); Terry (orange); Woodsman True (dark purple); Desert Song (coral).

Gauge

Finished gauge is 24 sts and 34 rounds over 10 cm / 4 in on 3.25 mm needles in the round.

Needles

3.25 mm / US 3 circular needles and 3 mm / US 21/2 circular needles 100 cm / 40 in long.

Pattern notes

Fáinleog is knitted seamlessly in the round. The allover colour pattern is worked from the chart, using two colours per round. The edgings of the cowl are knitted using simple 2 x 2 rib.
